The grand event implies the transformation of the historical market Vucciria of Palermo: squares, streets, palaces, courtyards and monuments, will be completely transformed with special effects, artistic lightings, fabrics, scenographies tailor made for each space, multimedia installations and large projections, thanks to the use of special projectors, capable of projecting images to mt. 20 X 20.

The selected itinerary will be one big stage where, simultaneously, will take place multi-disciplinary artistic events, inspired to the oral traditions of the Mediterranean area:musical performances, multimedia installations, choreographic events, recreations of architectural environments, all related to the memory and oral traditions of the Mediterranean and its identity.

In this way the entire market will be transformed into a research space with the participation of many artists and researchers, architects, set designers, archaeologists, anthropologists, theatre companies, performers, music groups and so on. The participation of inhabitants will actively contribute to the metamorphosis of the area.

The social structure, the cultural and natural landscape will determine the dramaturgy of the show itself, thus breaking the logic of conventional theatre spaces, making the physical space of the city as the real stage of representation.

During the event selected spaces will simultaneously come to life, viewers and spectators will become protagonists of the event, travellers along the identities of the Mediterranean area, explorers and archaeologists of the living memory. The site will reveal its essence, the wonder of its details, its main aspects of identity linked to its material and immaterial culture, its extraordinary side overshadowed by the repetitiveness and the ordinary side of our daily life. The invisible will become visible, the intangible will be, for one moment, tangible.

The artistic choice is oriented towards the involvement of Sicilian and Mediterranean artists, interpreters of the Mediterranean oral traditions in every field (music, theatre, performance, storytelling, handicrafts etc…

The production will also use sounds and audiovisual materials, coming from the multimedia labs of the project MEDINS, or recorded on the spot by the crew of the Theatre Potlach and by other participating artists. Also other audiovisual materials will be put available by the powerful archive of the Sicilian Regional Centre of the Cataloguing.

UNESCO 2003
